Rangers could have been crowned Premiership champions last season if Danny Rohl had stayed on as manager, the German coach has revealed. The Ibrox side finished second in 2025-26, just one point behind Hearts, after Rohl’s 30-week tenure ended in May.
What did Rohl achieve at Ibrox?
Rohl took charge in late 2025 and immediately set out a clear blueprint for Rangers. His side showed promise with a 2-2 draw at home to Celtic in February, dominating for 50 minutes. A 4-2 win over Hearts at Ibrox in March also hinted at progress under his leadership.
The German admitted the schedule left little room for preparation. Rangers played midweek games repeatedly and he felt a proper pre-season was essential. Still, he believed his project was on track before his move to Red Bull Salzburg in the summer.
Why does Rohl back McInnes now?
Rohl now fully supports Derek McInnes, who took over at Ibrox after his departure. The new boss faces his first Premiership game against Dundee United on Friday night. Rohl insists McInnes has the backing of the club’s hierarchy and can deliver the title.
He praised the club’s American owners and chairman Andrew Cavenagh for their vision. Rohl also highlighted McInnes’s intimate knowledge of Rangers, having played for the club. The German believes the foundations he laid can now be built upon.
What changes did Rohl push for?
Rohl was vocal about the need for leadership and squad refreshment. He insisted on tough decisions both on and off the pitch to move Rangers forward. His exit came after four defeats in the Premiership split left them third behind Celtic and Hearts.
Yet he remains proud of the direction set. Rohl pointed to the 66 goals scored and a +35 goal difference as proof of progress. He also singled out the 5-2 thrashing of Falkirk in May as a statement result.

The Gers kick off their new campaign at home to Dundee United on Friday, with the Premiership table wide open after Hearts’ title win.
