Barry Ferguson named as manager of Rangers Tennent's Sixes side

Rangers have appointed Barry Ferguson to manage their Tennent's Sixes side at Braehead Arena this October, as the six-a-side event returns.

Rangers Football Club announced on Friday that Barry Ferguson would take charge of the club's team for the Tennent's Sixes, the six-a-side legends event set to return to Braehead Arena over the weekend of Saturday, 3 October and Sunday, 4 October.

Every club in the William Hill Premiership has entered a side for the competition, which brings back a tournament last held in 1993 following nine years of matches starting in 1984. Partick Thistle claimed the final title before the event was discontinued.

'I'm delighted to be part of the Tennent's Sixes family and to help bring this fantastic event back to life for fans old and new,' Ferguson said.

Format and rules

The sides are divided into three regional groups of four, with the group winners, runners-up and the two strongest third-placed teams progressing to the knockout rounds. Each match must produce a winner, and if scores are level a penalty shootout offers a bonus point to the victor. The sin bin, a feature of the original competition, has been brought back.

Ferguson's Ibrox history

Ferguson built his reputation at Ibrox over two spells, collecting five league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups. He was appointed club captain at the age of 22 and, under Alex McLeish, helped the side complete a domestic treble in the 2002/03 season before being named Scottish Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year and Scottish PFA Players' Player of the Year. He returned to the club in 2005, helped Rangers reach a UEFA Cup final in 2008, and won the league again in the 2008/09 campaign. In February 2025 he took interim charge of the first team, guiding them past Fenerbahçe and into a UEFA Europa League quarter-final.

Tickets for the Braehead weekend are available through Braehead Arena, with a VIP option that includes a two-night stay in a four-star hotel, meals, drinks and travel alongside the Rangers Legends squad. VIP purchasers can also choose to sponsor an individual Legend, with their company's logo displayed beside the player on Rangers' platforms.
