Rangers forward Thelo Aasgaard has already won over new boss Derek McInnes by cutting his post-World Cup break short and returning to Ibrox 10 days early. The 24-year-old’s decision has impressed former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, who believes it sets the right tone for McInnes’ first season in charge.

Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, called Aasgaard’s move a “very positive” sign for the Light Blues. The forward arrived at Rangers last summer and managed eight goals and six assists in a mixed debut campaign. His early return suggests he’s ready to push for a bigger role under McInnes this term.
“Derek McInnes will love that,” Wyness said on the Football Insider Inside Track podcast. “McInnes wants to set leadership and standards, and this is exactly what he’d welcome. It’s a very positive sign.”

Wyness also highlighted Rangers’ record 98% season-ticket renewal rate for 2026-27, which sold out on 9 July-seven days faster than the previous year. He called the fans “absolute gold” and stressed that the players must repay their backing with “complete dedication.”
“They’ve got a fight on their hands with Hearts and Celtic,” Wyness added. “They’ll have to go above and beyond to reclaim the title.”

Aasgaard’s World Cup run with Norway to the quarter-finals showed his quality, but his early return underlines his commitment. After a debut season that mixed promise with inconsistency, he’s aiming to become a regular under McInnes. Wyness believes the forward is already on the right track.
“He’s got to show the utmost professionalism,” Wyness said. “Aasgaard’s decision sets an example for the rest of the squad.”
