Rangers' £16m Share Issue: A Step in the Right Direction?
Rangers have issued £16m worth of shares in the club, but former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness believes this move is 'papering over the cracks' rather than a major step in the right direction financially.
What happened?
Rangers confirmed the full subscription of their share issue earlier in July, and have a meeting planned with their new shareholders in August. The club issued the shares with the intention of raising money to go towards the first-team, but Wyness believes it is 'not the way forward in terms of the fix'.
Why it matters for Rangers
Wyness, who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, believes that the European revenue holds the key to Rangers re-establishing themselves as a financial 'machine' in Scottish football. He stressed that the missing European money is the key thing, and also having an effective player trading model.
What comes next?
Derek McInnes has already welcomed six new additions into his squad so far this summer, and the expectation is that there are still more deals to come. Rangers have the possible benefit of hosting the decisive second-leg of their Europa League qualifying tie against Jagiellonia Bialystok at Ibrox on 13 August.
