Rangers have lost 16-year-old defender Carson McGauley to Hearts after the youngster signed his first professional contract at Tynecastle. The centre-back, who helped Rangers' U17 side win the CAS Elite league last season, has left Ibrox after a decade to join Hearts' U19 setup.
What happened?
McGauley confirmed his move on Instagram, thanking "everyone at Rangers" for their support during his time at the club. He praised his teammates for the "unforgettable moments" they shared, marking the end of his 10-year journey at his boyhood club. Rangers legend Ally McCoist responded to McGauley's post with a message of encouragement, writing: "Best of luck wee man. You go for it."
Why it matters for Rangers
The departure of McGauley comes as Rangers look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. The club finished second in the Premiership last season, just one point behind leaders Heart of Midlothian, with a record of 19 wins, 12 draws and 2 losses from 33 games. With Ross McCrorie currently sidelined, Rangers may need to bolster their defensive options.
What comes next?
Hearts, under the guidance of Tony Bloom, are pushing to challenge the Old Firm and have made a statement by securing McGauley's signature. The youngster is expected to feature for Hearts' U19 side next season. Meanwhile, Rangers' next fixture is against Dundee at home on 30 December 2026.
